On this weekend in season 1992/93 Mark (“Howie”) Howard made his maiden century for Box Hill in the 3rd XI versus Heathmont in the Eastern Cricket Association. Chasing a modest total of 151 Box Hill made 8/323 to record a very comfortable victory. Mark Eyles took 5/56 with support from Cameron Smith with 3/49. Mark arrived at the crease at 2/55 and together with Simon Blake set about chasing down Heathmont’s total. Mark was eventually dismissed for 116. Support throughout the day came from Captain Russell Fewster, Simon Blake, Mark Eyles, Cameron Smith and David Carter. Mark played sparingly over a number of seasons for Box Hill with his number one passion being chasing waves in far flung parts of the globe. Before being universally known as Howie, Mark was given the nickname “Sparky” given his bat was being held together with electrical tape. Mark went on to play at Hawthorn-Waverly for a number of years however is better known to most for his work as a commentator on the Big Bash, Triple M football and many other sports programs.
