From the Vault - On this weekend
Date of Event : Fri Oct 12, 2018 7:55PM

Given the various different fixtures across the club we revert to “on this weekend”.  The women move to Round 2 this weekend. For the men we remain in Round 1 and therefore focused upon significant debuts throughout the grades.

On this weekend in season 2012/13 the Box Hill Women’s 2nd XI recorded a thrilling tie against Melton in their T-20 game. Batting first Box Hill made 6/67 from their 20 overs with club legend Margaret (“Minnie”) Pretty top scoring with 31 not out. Wickets fell regularly in Melton’s innings however given the low target the game was always on a knife’s edge – panic set in resulting in 2 run outs for wickets 8 and 9 (one to Laura Shaw and the other to Nicole Breshkin). The last pair required just 9 runs for a win with overs to spare. Monique Draycott had the ball in hand in the 19th over with her side in need of a miracle – the last pair brought the scores level and surely victory for Melton. However, on the 5th ball of the 19th over Monique claimed the tenth wicket caught by Nicole Breshkin resulting in a tie and a lucky escape for Box Hill.

On this weekend in 1999/2000 an almost 14 year old Peter Neville made his senior debut for Box Hill in the 4th XI versus Monash University. It was a largely uneventful debut for Peter but more important for Steven Flinn (current Box Hill Vets player) who top scored in the game and continues to tell his sons that he was a better batsman than Peter (omitting the fact that Peter was only 13 years old at the time). Peter obviously went on to significantly higher honours earning his baggy green Australian cap at Lords in 2015 and continues to dominate at First Class level for NSW.

On this weekend in 2004/05 Jacques Augustin made his senior debut for Box Hill in the 2nd XI versus Bayswater. Jacques did not bat and claimed 1 dismissal behind the stumps – MyCricket did not record the bowler however given the “dominant” bowling performance from Sam Morris it would be a safe bet that he drew the edge behind. Jacques went on to play Premier Cricket for Fitzroy-Doncaster and now Dandenong where he was the keeper in the 1st XI Premiership last season keeping to international bowlers Peter Siddle and Darren Pattinson.

On this weekend in 2006/07 Harrison Smyth made his senior debut at the age of 13 for Box Hill in the 5th XI versus Mulgrave. Harrison bowled 1 over and did not bat on his debut and watched from the sidelines as his Dad Greg smashed 80 (58 in boundaries / sixes). Harrison is now an established star at Carlton playing alongside his older brother Tom (who will no doubt feature in a future edition) – both of whom were named in the Men’s Premier Cricket Team of the Year for 2017/18. Harrison’s stellar run of form saw him represent the Victorian U/23 team in 2018. Harrison has also started the Premier season in style with 105 no on the weekend. The 5ths team included club legends Greg Smyth, Gary Miles and Andrew Davidson together with current 4th XI skipper Peter Robertson and Tom Barelli who lines up in the 2nd XI this weekend.

Good luck to all of the debutants in the 2nds, 3rds and 4ths this weekend – who knows what the future holds.
